Sammanfattning : This thesis is a study of how the American author Edith Wharton (1862-1937) in a number of novels and short stories written between 1876 and 1937 depicts cultural encounters between Americans and Europeans, mostly Frenchmen. Chiefly concerned with Fast and Loose, “The Last Asset”, Madame de Treymes, “Les Metteurs en Scène”, The Custom of the Country and The Age of Innocence, each of which articulates ideas relevant to the theme investigated, the thesis also contains a supplementary discussion of The Reef, The Glimpses of the Moon, The Mother’s Recompense and The Buccaneers. Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the functions of prevalent threshold-like spaces such as windows, stairs, doors or balconies in theatre plays from the height of the Romantic era in France (1828-1835). The study coins the concept of « para-espaces » (para-spaces) and elucidates the way they mediate between different divisions of the spatiotemporal structure of a play. LÄS MER

Sammanfattning : This thesis identifies two different kinds of knowledge in Thomas Hardy's novels: the everyday, passed on from generation to generation, which is non-academic and closely bound to the local environment and its traditions; and the specialised, recorded in the printed word, which is the product of formal education and independent of the local community and its traditions. Sammanfattning : The aim of this dissertation is to discuss and exemplify the use of theatre and theatricality in the film aesthetics of Ingmar Bergman (1918-2007). The main primary material of the study consists of a selection of Bergman’s films: the nine commercials made for Bris soap (1951-1953) and the feature films Sawdust and Tinsel (1953), Smiles of a Summer Night (1955), The Seventh Seal (1957), The Magician (1958), Through a Glass Darkly (1961), Winter Light (1963), The Silence (1963), Persona (1966), The Ritual (1969), Scenes from a Marriage (1973), Fanny and Alexander (1983) and Saraband (2003).
