  1. 11. Designing for the incorporation of programming in mathematical education : Programming as an instrument for mathematical problem solving

    Författare :Andreas Borg; Kenneth Ruthven; Maria Fahlgren; Chantal Buteau; Karlstads universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Mathematics; math; upper secondary; problem solving; programming; coding; instrument; instrumental genesis; education; mathematics education; scheme; matematik; skola; utbildning; problemlösning; programmering; kodning; instrument; instrumental genes; utbildning; matematikdidaktik; schema; Pedagogiskt arbete; Educational Work; Matematikdidaktik; Mathematics didactics;

    Sammanfattning : This study explored Swedish upper secondary school students’ use of programming for mathematical purposes. The aim of the study was to investigate the process through which students learn how to use a programming environment as a technical artefact during mathematical problem solving and how the orchestration of such learning situations could facilitate this process. 2. 12. Learning to solve problems that you have not learned to solve: Strategies in mathematical problem solving

    Författare :Éva Fülöp; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Problem-solving strategies; Problem-solving ability; Variation theory; Design principles; Classroom teaching; Design-based research DBR ;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the relationship between problem-solving strategies and success in mathematical problem solving. In its introductory part, it pursues and describes the term strategy in mathematics and discusses its relationship to the method and algorithm concepts. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Approaching Mathematical Discourse : Two analytical frameworks and their relation to problem solving interactions

    Författare :Andreas Ryve; Kimmo Eriksson; Inger Wistedt; Anna Sfard; Mälardalens högskola; []

    Sammanfattning : The driving force of conducting the two studies presented in this thesis is to examine ways that conceptual understanding and problem solving could be part of mathematics teaching, and through that, part of students' mathematical knowledge. The specific aims of the thesis are: 1) to characterize the classroom discourse of two, apparently similar, problem solving courses in teacher education and 2) to discuss the possibilities of developing two analytical approaches - the communicational approach to cognition and the dialogical approach - used for studying mathematical discourse. 4. 14. Orchestrating mathematical whole-class discussions in the problem-solving classroom : Theorizing challenges and support for teachers

    Författare :Maria Larsson; Andreas Ryve; João Pedro da Ponte; Mälardalens högskola; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; whole-class discussion; problem solving; five practices model; mathematical connection; argumentation; inquiry argument; supportive tool; Didactics; didaktik;

    Sammanfattning : Promising teaching approaches for developing students’ mathematical competencies include the approach of teaching mathematics through problem solving. Orchestrating a whole-class discussion of students’ ideas is an important aspect of teaching through problem solving. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Chemistry: content, context and choices : towards students' higher order problem solving in upper secondary school

    Författare :Karolina Broman; Eva Silfver; Dan Johnels; Judith Bennett; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; chemistry education; upper secondary students; meaningful learning; higher order thinking; problem solving; context-based learning; interest; educational choice; identity; kemididaktik; didactics of chemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Chemistry is often claimed to be difficult, irrelevant, and uninteresting to school students. Even students who enjoy doing science often have problems seeing themselves as being scientists. This thesis explores and challenges the negative perception of chemistry by investigating upper secondary students’ views on the subject. LÄS MER
