    Sammanfattning : This investigation has sought to understand and explain the investments made by compulsory school pupils and their families’ stances towards the study of modern foreign languages (English not included). Which pupils (with regard to gender, social and national background and grade point average) chose to invest in the study of modern foreign languages? What strategies pertaining to the study of modern foreign languages did families from different backgrounds develop and how can these differences be understood?The conceptual tools, capital and strategy, developed by Pierre Bourdieu were used.     Sammanfattning : Education is a neglected area within globalisation research, and, within educational research, very few studies have been devoted to transnational phenomena. In this study, transnational educational strategies are analysed as ingredients in social groups’ strategies, while the transnational investments of higher education institutions are understood primarily as resources in national educational field struggles.     Sammanfattning : The Swedish educational reforms in the beginning of the 1990s, introducing a public-funded voucher system, free school choice and the right to run schools as commercial enterprises, had an important impact on upper secondary education. The Stockholm region, the most populous in Sweden, offered favourable conditions for the growth of a previously non-existent educational market. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : Who is more likely to follow medical recommendations, invest in their health and pursue higher degrees of schooling? Behavioral economic theory provides a clear answer to this question: more patient individuals (who discount future outcomes less heavily) should be more likely to choose costs and forgo utility now, in order to get better long-run outcomes. But does this behavioral theory match up with peoples' real choices? If so, can it be used to predict important future life events? In four different chapters, this thesis shed new light on education, illness, and death outcomes. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : This dissertation examines classroom conversations involving refugee and immigrant youth in a second language (L2) introduction program, exploring how L2 Swedish emerges as a multiparty accomplishment by both the teacher and the students. Drawing on forty hours of video-recorded Swedish L2 classroom conversations, as well as on observations and informal interviews, it focuses on talk as a form of social action. LÄS MER
