6. Understanding the social integration of adolescents of foreign origin : Longitudinal investigations of inter-origin friendship formation
Sammanfattning : The present dissertation aims to understand some of the opportunities for, and influences on, the social integration of adolescents of foreign origin in Sweden. Informed by previous research, the dissertation suggests that successful social integration involves friendship formation between peers of similar origins (intra-origin friendship formation) as well as friendship formation between peers of different origins (inter-origin friendship formation). Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on how middle school children organize peer group relationships through various forms of so-called relational talk (Evaldsson, 2007), while they also negotiate and more generally make sense of friendships and romantic relationships. Prior micro-sociological research has demonstrated how children in everyday language practices through, for example, teasing, assessments, and storytelling—articulate and manage social relationships and behaviors, moral views, and shared cultural knowledge, thereby constructing their emerging social worlds (see Goodwin & Kyratzis, 2011, for an overview). According to the state party SED, both the GDR’s government and its people met with all members of the working class, regardless their ethnicity or culture, in the spirit of Völkerfreundschaft – the peoples’ friendship. Sammanfattning : The aim of this dissertation is to analyze how Nordic women artists negotiated their professional identity in painting in the 1880s, focusing on the genres of the self-portrait, the friendship image and the studio interior. It investigates how artistic identity is fashioned through self-representation, collaboration with a colleague and in interaction with the interior of the studio as a constitutive space of artistic professionalism.
