16. From source to the environment : Strategies for identification and determination of hydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in complex particulate matrices
Sammanfattning : Adverse health effects have been linked to exposure to particulate matter, and wood combustion is considered as an important source of harmful particulate matter in the urban air and environment. Hydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are a group of compounds with toxic, endocrine disrupting and carcinogenic properties. LÄS MER
17. Characterization of PAC-contaminated soil with the focus on availability, leachability and biological activities
Sammanfattning : Current risk assessments of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs)-contaminated soil are often based on the 16 priority PAHs and do not consider availability of PACs in soil sufficiently. This may lead to uncertainties of the assessment, since important contaminants can be overlooked and only a small fraction of contaminants is available for the uptake for organisms. LÄS MER
18. Factors Influencing the Yield of Mutations Induced by Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Mammalian Cells
Sammanfattning : Environmental contaminants are ubiquitously present in the urban environment, this has the implication that humans are exposed to toxic and carcinogenic chemicals. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are one type of environmental contaminants, which are produced by combustion of organic compounds. LÄS MER
19. Characterization of PAH-contaminated soils focusing on availability, chemical composition and biological effects
Sammanfattning : The risks associated with a soil contaminated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are generally assessed by measuring individual PAHs in the soil and correlating the obtained amounts to known adverse biological effects of the PAHs. The validity of such a risk estimation is dependent on the presence of additional compounds, the availability of the compounds (including the PAHs), and the methods used to correlate the measured chemical data and biological effects. 20. Selective Retention of β-Carbolines and 7,12-Dimethylbenz[a]anthracene in the Brain : Role of Neuromelanin and Cytochrome P450 for Toxicity
Sammanfattning : The ß-carbolines norharman and harman structurally resemble the synthetic compound 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) that is known for its ability to damage neuromelanin-containing dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra and thereby induce parkinsonism. MPTP is, however, not normally present in the environment whereas the ß-carbolines are present in cooked food and tobacco smoke. LÄS MER
