  1. 1. Distribution and Long-term Effects of the Environmental Neurotoxin β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) : Brain changes and behavioral impairments following developmental exposure

    Författare :Oskar Karlsson; Eva Brittebo; Nils Gunnar Lindquist; Erika Roman; Sandra Ceccatelli; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ALS PDC; Guam; Developmental neurotoxicity; Brain growth spurt; Behavior; Nonprotein amino acid; Excitotoxic; Cyanobacteria; Apoptosis; BMAA; environmental toxin; Algal blooming; Algblomning; algtoxin; alggift; hjärnutveckling; Toxicology; Toxikologi; Toxicology; Toxikologi;

    Sammanfattning : Many cyanobacteria are reported to produce the nonprotein amino acid β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA). Cyanobacteria are extensively distributed in terrestrial and aquatic environments and recently BMAA was detected in temperate aquatic ecosystems, e.g. the Baltic Sea. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Priority setting strategies for regulatory testing of industrial chemicals

    Författare :Anna Nordberg; Christina Rudén; Sven Ove Hansson; Nils Gunnar Lindquist; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; risk assessment; risk management; regulatory toxicology; test strategies; prioritisation; REACH; industrial chemicals; History of technology and industry; Teknik- och industrihistoria;

    Sammanfattning : For the majority of the estimated 70,000 industrial chemical substances available on the European market today there is not enough information to enable a reasonably complete assessment of the risks that they might pose to man and the environment. Any strategy for the generation of additional data for these substances should aim at making testing as efficient as possible taking into account environmental and health protection, time, monetary cost and animal welfare. 3. 3. Selective Retention of β-Carbolines and 7,12-Dimethylbenz[a]anthracene in the Brain : Role of Neuromelanin and Cytochrome P450 for Toxicity

    Författare :Anna Östergren; Eva Brittebo; Nils Gunnar Lindquist; Anne-Lie Svensson; Hans Tjälve; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Toxicology; β-carboline; neuromelanin; norharman; harman; parkinsonism; Parkinson s disease; motoric impairment; behaviour; glia cells; substantia nigra; dopamine melanin; PC12 cells; ER stress; grp78; hsp90; cytochrome P450; CYP1A1; CYP1B1; blood-brain interfaces; 7; 12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon; endothelial cell; smooth muscle cell; bioactivation; Toxikologi; Toxicology; Toxikologi; Toxicology; toxikologi;

    Sammanfattning : The ß-carbolines norharman and harman structurally resemble the synthetic compound 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) that is known for its ability to damage neuromelanin-containing dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra and thereby induce parkinsonism. MPTP is, however, not normally present in the environment whereas the ß-carbolines are present in cooked food and tobacco smoke. LÄS MER
