  1. 1. Tracing and apportioning sources of dioxins using multivariate pattern recognition techniques

    Författare :Anteneh Assefa; Mats Professor; Karin Professor; Paul Professor; Patrik Andersson; Shigeki Masunaga; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin; polychlorinated dibenzofuran; positive matrix fac- torization; PMF; principal component analysis; PCA; Baltic Sea; sediment core; PCDD F; sources; marine; fish; environmental half-live; peak year; peak level; temporal trend; spatial variation; coastal; offshore; chemical fingerprint; Environmental Science; miljövetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : High levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in edible fish in the Baltic Sea have raised health concerns in the Baltic region and the rest of Europe. Thus, there are urgent needs to characterize sources in order to formulate effective mitigation strategies. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Association of hydrophobic organic compounds to organic material in the soil system

    Författare :Silviu-Laurentiu Badea; Mats Tysklind; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; HOCs; Organic Matter; Clay; DOM; Environmental Science; miljövetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Contaminated soils and sediments have been identified as significant secondary sources of organic contaminants.  Leaching tests may be useful tools to estimate the mobility of contaminants via the water phase and thereby the risk for groundwater and surface water contamination. 3. 3. Characterization of PAH-contaminated soils focusing on availability, chemical composition and biological effects

    Författare :Magnus Bergknut; Mats Tysklind; Dag Broman; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons; PAHs; availability; bioavailability; chemical analysis; characterization; GC-TOFMS; bioassay; toxicity; biological testing; multivariate methods; PCA; PLS; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Sammanfattning : The risks associated with a soil contaminated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are generally assessed by measuring individual PAHs in the soil and correlating the obtained amounts to known adverse biological effects of the PAHs. The validity of such a risk estimation is dependent on the presence of additional compounds, the availability of the compounds (including the PAHs), and the methods used to correlate the measured chemical data and biological effects. 4. 4. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers and Tetrabromobisphenol A : Chemical synthesis, X-ray crystallography and Photochemical degradation

    Författare :Johan Eriksson; Åke Bergman; Lars Eriksson; Mats Tysklind; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Sammanfattning : In the 1960s’ several manmade chemicals were detected in the environment, far from their sources. The most well known, and most likely those with the largest impact on the society, were DDT and its related compounds, and PCBs. These anthropogenic compounds were characterised as persistent organic pollutants (POPs). LÄS MER

  5. 5. Thermal formation and chlorination of dioxins and dioxin-like compounds

    Författare :Stina Jansson; Stellan Marklund; Mats Tysklind; Jochen F. Müller; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; dioxin; dioxin-like compounds; isomer distribution pattern; homologue profile; injection; O2PLS; PCDD; PCDF; PCN; PCBz; PCPh; MSW combustion; formation; chlorination; flue gas; quench profiles; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis contributes to an increased understanding of the formation of dioxins and dioxin-like compounds in combustion processes. Although emissions to air from waste incineration facilities have been greatly reduced by the use of efficient air pollution control measures, the resulting residues (ashes and filters) are highly toxic and are classified as hazardous waste.
