11. Recovery of organic carbon from municipal waste streams
Sammanfattning : The focus of the current study was on the recovery of carbon from municipal bio-waste streams. Firstly, the relationship between methanogenic pathways and the properties of anaerobic granules was studied using two pilot-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors with different granule size distribution. 12. Sorting and processing of neutrophil granule proteins
Sammanfattning : The neutrophil granulocytes have a critical role in innate immunity in particular through phagocytosis of microorganisms. Their cytoplasmic granule subsets store digestive enzymes and antibiotic proteins that are released during this event. LÄS MER
13. Imaging the molecular pathways of neurodegeneration : New pathologies of SCA7
Sammanfattning : Spinocerebellar Ataxia type 7 (SCA7) is a genetic neurodegenerative disease with lethal outcome that affects the cerebellum and retina of patients. This thesis focuses on characterising molecular pathological pathways that cause toxicity and cell death in SCA7. LÄS MER
14. Assessment of eosinophil degranulation in allergic diseases and experimental models
Sammanfattning : In allergic disorders, the eosinophilic granulocytes migrate to affected tissues and release granule proteins with cytotoxic, immunoregulatory, and remodeling-promoting properties. Given that degranulation is reflected by a loss in eosinophil granule density of living cells, or by cell membrane rupture and release of intact granules, these morphological changes may represent a biomarker of the allergic disease. 15. Functional roles of protein phase separated assemblies in cellular stress response and proteinopathies
Sammanfattning : For a long time, pertinent biological conundrums, such as the organization and compartmentalization of the cytoplasm and nucleoplasm, perplexed the scientific community. The organization of the complex biochemistry in an accurate space and time manner could not be explained without the enclosure of a membrane. LÄS MER
