1. The oxidative metabolism by eosinophils : Effects of allergen exposure and interleukin-5
Sammanfattning : In this thesis the oxidative metabolism by blood eosinophils from birch pollen allergic subjects was studied and compared to that by eosinophils from healthy controls, during and out of the pollen season. The effects and mechanisms of in vitro IL-5 priming on blood eosinophils were investigated and compared to the effects of in vivo priming during pollen exposure. LÄS MER
2. On the cytotoxic and proinflammatory properties of eosinophils
Sammanfattning : Eosinophils are multi-functional leukocytes involved in the pathophysiology of inflammatory diseases such as asthma and inflammatory bowel disease. Participation in some neoplastic diseases and in the host defense against helminths has also been postulated. They are considered both good and bad, protecting or harming the host. LÄS MER
3. Neuro-immuno-regulation of inflammation in the colonic mucosa : Focus on mast cells and eosinophils in bowel disorders
Sammanfattning : Intestinal homeostasis is key to control uptake across the mucosa and protect from harmful substances. Disturbances in the bidirectional communication between the gut and the brain are implicated in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), being Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) the two most common IBD subtypes. 4. Eosinophils, their progenitors and T helper cells in allergic airway inflammation
Sammanfattning : Introduction: Asthma is a heterogeneous chronic lung disease associated with pronounced inflammatory changes in the airways. Eosinophilic inflammation is the trait that is best linked to symptoms and treatment responses in allergic asthma. LÄS MER
5. Activation of human eosinophils by exogenous danger signals
Sammanfattning : Eosinophilic granulocytes are leukocytes that reside in the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. Their function in health is unknown. LÄS MER
