16. A genomic approach to smooth muscle differentiation and diversity
Sammanfattning : Smooth muscle cells (SMCs) are a broad class of contractile cells that are found in a number of organs systems, including the vasculature, the urogenital system, the bronchi and the gastrointestinal tract. The two main functions exerted by SMCs are to provide contractile force and to synthesize structural components of the extracellular matrix. LÄS MER
17. Modulation of the calcium-force relationship in smooth muscle by polyamines and metabolic inhibition
Sammanfattning : The relationship between intracellular free calcium ([Ca2+]i) and force in smooth muscle was investigated in receptor-coupled permeabilized preparations and by fluorimetry of the calcium indicator Fura 2 in intact smooth muscle. The time integral of spontaneous [Ca2+]i transients in the intact rat portal vein was decreased by cyanide and, during tonic contraction, cyanide reduced force without changing [Ca2+]i implying metabolic sensitivity of both membrane excitation and [Ca2+]i - activation of the contractile proteins. 18. Selective Retention of β-Carbolines and 7,12-Dimethylbenz[a]anthracene in the Brain : Role of Neuromelanin and Cytochrome P450 for Toxicity
Sammanfattning : The ß-carbolines norharman and harman structurally resemble the synthetic compound 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) that is known for its ability to damage neuromelanin-containing dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra and thereby induce parkinsonism. MPTP is, however, not normally present in the environment whereas the ß-carbolines are present in cooked food and tobacco smoke. LÄS MER
19. Immunopathological and Structural Alterations in Difficult to Control Asthma
Sammanfattning : Asthma is a chronic respiratory disorder affecting an estimated 300 million people worldwide. Most patients with asthma can be controlled with bronchodilators and low to moderate dose inhaled corticosteroids. However, an estimated 5-10% of the population presents a more troublesome disease, often referred to as severe asthma. LÄS MER
20. Cyclic nucleotide signalling systems in vascular smooth muscle cells and immune system cells with special reference to phosphodiesterases PDE3 and PDE4
Sammanfattning : The cyclic nucleotide signalling systems are important in vascular smooth muscle and in the immune system, and are of interest from a pharmacological point of view. Drugs which interfere with the cyclic nucleotide levels have profound effects on heart, blood vessels and airways and have actual or potential use in several important diseases, such as heart failure, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, asthma and autoimmune diseases.
