16. Epidemiology of diabetes in a well defined population in Sweden: the Skaraborg Diabetes Registry
Sammanfattning : Time trends in prevalence, incidence and mortality was followed in 15000 diabetic patients in 1991?2005. Clinical findings, C-peptide protocols, and islet antibodies were compared in their ability to distinguish type 1 from type 2 diabetes, and factors associated with the prognosis of diabetes were explored. 17. Immuno-modulatory functions of CD1d-restricted natural killer T cells
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on a small population of non-conventional T lymphocytes, called natural killer T (NKT) cells. NKT cells have many unique features; such as recognition of glycolipids presented by CD1d, expression of NK receptors and rapid production of large amounts of cytokines, such as IL-4 and IFN-gamma,?upon activation. 18. The significance of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (u-PA) in tumour growth and Linomide-induced upregulation of u-PA's endogenous inhibitor PAI-2
Sammanfattning : The progressive process of tumour invasion and generation of metastases is the primary cause of death for most patients with cancer. Some of the regulatory components of this progressive process are adhesion, migration, and proteolysis. LÄS MER
19. Effect of IL-1beta secretion on lymphoid tissue and on antitumor immune responses
Sammanfattning : Interleukin (IL)-1beta is one of the most pleiotropic and potent cytokines, produced predominantly by activated monocytes and macrophages. IL-1 plays an important role in normal immunoregulatory processes but also in pathophysiological inflammatory responses. In the present study, we developed a model for active IL-1beta secretion. 20. The importance of major histocompatibility complex class II genes for the development of autoimmune inflammation
Sammanfattning : In this thesis the role of major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) class II molecules in development of autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), was studied. By combining an experimental model for RA, collagen type II induced arthritis (CIA), with molecular biology methods the importance of polymorphism in Mhc class II genes for disease development was investigated.
