1. PLASMA PROTEINS IN NORMAL AND PREECLAMPTIC PREGNANCY
Sammanfattning : The aim of the research presented in this thesis was to provide extended background knowledge concerning several biochemical markers, used for the medical evaluation of pregnant women with suspected or confirmed preeclampsia, in order to improve the reliability of monitoring. Plasma levels of beta-2 microglobulin, cystatin C and beta trace protein are known to reflect renal filtration in non-pregnant settings, and the plasma proteins, C-reactive protein and serum amyloid A protein, are known to be sensitive markers of inflammation. 2. Hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells and potentials for application in fetal cell replacement therapy
Sammanfattning : Fetal cell replacement therapy or in utero hematopoietic cell transplantation (IUHCT) is proposed as a non-myeloablative alternative to bone marrow transplantation (BMT) for a number of inborn immunologic, hematologic and metabolic disorders. IUHCT represents the method through which variable amounts of natural or genetically modified hematopoietic cells can be transferred to the fetal recipient in hope of correcting the disorder and preventing postnatal permanent organ damage. 3. Nitric oxide synthase in female reproductive and urinary organs: Hormonal regulation and functional significance
Sammanfattning : Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity was studied in cytosolic and particulate fractions in reproductive organs from rabbit (uterus and vagina) and rat (uterus, vagina and cervix). NOS was found predominantly in cytosolic fractions in all tissues and the activity of NOS in both fractions was highly Ca2+ dependent. LÄS MER
4. The Plasminogen Activation System in Human Endometrium and Endometrial Cancer; Function, Tissue Localization and Prognostic Importance
Sammanfattning : The release of urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) from endometrial stromal cells decreased after progesterone stimulation, due to upregulation of PA inhibitor 1 (PAI-1) and uPA receptor (uPAR). Subsequently, the uPA:PAI-1 complex was internalized and degraded via uPAR. LÄS MER
5. Fetal ECG waveform analysis for intrapartum monitoring
Sammanfattning : Waveform analysis of the fetal electrocardiogram has been studied since the early seventies from both physiological, signal processing and clinical aspects. It has been found to contain more useful information than the mere detection of RR-intervals (fetal heart rate), e.g. LÄS MER
