21. C5a Receptor Expression in Severe Sepsis and Septic Shock
Sammanfattning : In patients with sepsis, the activation of the cascade systems, for example the complement system with the generation of C5a, is followed by a state of immunosuppression with impaired bactericidal capacity caused by suppression of the neutrophil granulocytes. To inhibit the C5a-induced systemic inflammatory and the following anti-inflammatory responses, different anti-C5a strategies have been successful in experimental models of sepsis. LÄS MER
22. Exploring nanosystems for biomedical applications focusing on photodynamic therapy and drug delivery
Sammanfattning : The increasing incidences of cancer and related deaths call for the development of new and improved treatment modalities. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) today is an alternative to conventional treatments, but has limitations. This thesis explores different nanosystems with aim to improve PDT focusing on spectroscopic and ex vivo studies. LÄS MER
23. Dynamic changes in T cell compartments and new approaches in evaluating DSS induced and Gai2 deficient colitis
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to increase the understanding of the immunopathology of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). The first aim was to elucidate how the thymus and the gut epithelium were affected by colitis. The second aim was to investigate new ways of assessing and monitoring colitis. LÄS MER
24. Optimisation of Chemotherapy Treatment in Advanced Colorectal Cancer
Sammanfattning : Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignant diseases in Sweden – more than 5000 new cases are diagnosed each year. The overall five-year survival is about 60% and in cases of recurrence the prognosis is poor. LÄS MER
25. Mechanisms of Transgene Silencing in Neural Cells -Implications for Ex Vivo Gene Therapy to the Brain
Sammanfattning : The use of genetically modifi ed neural stem and progenitor cells could possibly be a future strategy for repairing a brain suffering from neurodegeneration. However, so far it has proven diffi cult to maintain sufficient levels of a transferred gene in suitable cell types, after transplantation. LÄS MER
