1. Mechanisms of Transgene Silencing in Neural Cells -Implications for Ex Vivo Gene Therapy to the Brain
Sammanfattning : The use of genetically modifi ed neural stem and progenitor cells could possibly be a future strategy for repairing a brain suffering from neurodegeneration. However, so far it has proven diffi cult to maintain sufficient levels of a transferred gene in suitable cell types, after transplantation. LÄS MER
2. The Role of the SHB Adapter Protein in Cell Differentiation and Development
Sammanfattning : The present study was conducted in order to assess a role of the SH2 domain-containing adapter protein SHB in development and cell differentiation.Embryonic stem (ES) cells overexpressing SHB and SHB with an inactive SH2 domain (R522K-SHB) were obtained. LÄS MER
3. Development of Gene Therapy for Hematopoietic Stem Cells using Lentiviral Vectors
Sammanfattning : Hematopoietic stem cells are an ideal target for genetic manipulation for the purpose of curing hematological disorders as they have the ability to develop into all blood lineages and to self-renew. In this study we demonstrate that lentiviral vectors, based on HIV-1, can efficiently transfer genes into human hematopoietic progenitor and stem cells as assessed following stem cell transplantation in immune compromised mice. 4. Molecular Breeding of Sugar Beet, Transformation, Transgene silencing, Virus and Herbicide resistance
Sammanfattning : The main objectives in sugar beet breeding, are to improve yield, quality and to develop disease resistance. The disease resistance may be developed either by conventional, or molecular breeding techniques. The molecular breeding techniques include, methods to genetically engineer plants for expression of introduced genes. LÄS MER
5. The antagonistic role of activated oncogenes and apoptosis : studies of n-myc and p53 in lymphoid tumorigenesis
Sammanfattning : Inactivation of the p53 tumor suppressor gene and activation of proto-oncogenes have been implicated in the initiation and/or progression of a number of neoplasms. In this thesis, the involvement of N-myc gene activation has been studied in mouse plasmacytomagenesis and the role of wild-type (wt)p53 and oncogene activation has been evaluated with particular emphasis on apoptosis.
