1. GFP as a tool to monitor membrane protein topology and overexpression in Escherichia coli
Sammanfattning : Membrane proteins are essential for life, and roughly one-quarter of all open reading frames in sequenced genomes code for membrane proteins. Unfortunately, our understanding of membrane proteins lags behind that of soluble proteins, and is best reflected by the fact that only 0. LÄS MER
2. In vivo properties of neural stem cells after transplantation into the rat brain-Studies of phenotypic differentiation and functional integration using cell-specific labelling and electrophysiological techniques
Sammanfattning : In the present thesis, we have examined the in vivo properties of in vitro expanded human and rat neural stem-and progenitor cells after transplantation into the neonatal and adult rat brain. The survival and differentiation of the grafted cells were assessed using species-specific antisera, and pre-labelling with the reporter gene green fluorescent protein (GFP). LÄS MER
3. In search of a biosensor for DNT detection : Studies of inducer response and specificity of DntR
Sammanfattning : The primary aim of the work presented in this thesis was to change the inducer specificity of the DntR protein in order to improve the response to DNT. The long-term goal is to use this protein in a biosensor for DNT, a signature compound for detection of the explosive TNT. LÄS MER
4. Synaptic Integration of Hippocampal Neurons Generated in the Adult Brain: Influence of a Pathological Environment
Sammanfattning : The adult brain constantly produces new neurons from endogenous neural progenitor cells located in at least two regions, the subgranular zone (SGZ) in dentate gyrus of the hippocampus, and the subventricular zone (SVZ). Major efforts are underway to discover the functional significance of new neurons in the adult brain. LÄS MER
5. The role of P fimbriae for Escherichia coli establishment and mucosal inflammation in the human urinary tract
Sammanfattning : Bacterial adhesion to the bladder mucosa is a critical step for the establishment of Escherichia coli bacteriuria. The P-fimbriae, encoded by the pap gene cluster, are considered as virulence factors but the mechanisms have been debated. This study defined the roles for P fimbriation during the early colonization of the human urinary tract. LÄS MER
