    Sammanfattning : The theoretical point of departure in this dissertation proposes that the liberal welfare state includes a fundamental logic of integration, viewing the attainment of social equality between different categories in society as a main condition for social integration. But how can this logic of integration be applied to a multicultural society? Is trying to achieve equal access to certain socio-economic standards sufficient, or does cultural diversity call for other measures in order to fulfill the aim of equality and integration?In this study it is argued that the liberal welfare state in a multicultural society is confronted with three tensions.     Sammanfattning : To form well written texts in a culture where the norms for writing are changing is difficult for both native and non-native writers. Moreover, deviations from the norm among non-native writers can be explained by inadequate command of formal and pragmatic knowledge of the new language or a disinclination in non-native writers to accept socio-cultural rules, different from their own. A study of existential attitudes based on essays written in a multicultural upper secondary school for adults The aim of this study is to survey and interpret outlooks on life as expressed in 175 essays written (1999-2001) in a multicultural Swedish suburb by adult students learning Swedish, Swedish as a Foreign Language, and Philosophy. What are the recurring themes in these essays? How do they reflect the fundamental existential problems of their authors? The theoretical background rests on existential hermeneutics with Sartre (1943, 1946, 1984) as the most important philosophical source. LÄS MER
