    Sammanfattning : Abstract: This thesis examines the non-dominant and self-subversive aspects of visuality in Roberto Bolaño’s 2666 through the lens of the philosophical discussion on representation, particularly in its post-structuralist context. The present research is grounded in the conviction that 2666 embodies the 20th-century crisis of representation and approaches the novel through an analysis of different aspects of the text’s visuality, because, ever since Plato’s Republic, representation has been conceptualised mostly in terms of vision.     Sammanfattning : The overarching purpose of this study is to map out how intertextual relations are manifested in texts produced within a government initiative on arts for the elderly, and to shed light on how discourses on the elderly and the arts are articulated in texts from the initiative. This purpose is addressed with qualitative research methods, and with a focus on three themes: intertextual relations, representations of the elderly, and constructions of the purposefulness of the initiative.     Sammanfattning : This thesis aims to contribute to the growing body of knowledge concerning the adult basic literacy education in the Nordic countries and broaden research on literacy from its traditional focus on verbal texts to include images and visual texts. The thesis comprises a research survey concerning adult literacy and two empirical, exploratory studies focusing on the use of visual texts in the basic Swedish language programme for adult immigrants, Svenskundervisning för invandrare (sfi).
