  1. 1. The use of museum specimens in conservation genomics

    Författare :Johanna von Seth; Love Dalén; Karin Norén; Gernot Segelbacher; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; conservation genomics; museum specimens; genomic erosion; diversity; inbreeding; mutational load; genetic drift; purging; population divergence; local extinction; population decline; Sumatran rhinoceros; kakapo; arctic fox; Chatham Island black robin; Systematic Zoology; zoologisk systematik och evolutionsforskning;

    Sammanfattning : In the face of an increasing number of species being threatened by extinction, museum collections can constitute a powerful resource for acquiring genomic data of endangered taxa. By utilising datasets that combine genomes from present-day populations with those from historical timepoints, several questions relevant for conservation can be investigated. LÄS MER

  2. 2. The age of museomics : How to get genomic information from museum specimens of Lepidoptera

    Författare :Elsa Call; Biodiversitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Museomics; Museum specimens; Lepidoptera; WGS; Target enrichment; Phylogenomics; NGS;

    Sammanfattning : In the age of museomics, the ability to sequence the genetic material from old museum specimens provides an invaluable and often untapped molecular resource. The application of the latest Next-Generation sequencing (NGS) technologies to such specimens allows us to utilise the diverse biobank that is natural history museums. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Platsens blick : Vetenskapsakademien och den naturalhistoriska resan 1790-1840

    Författare :Pär Eliasson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; travel; apodemics; natural history; Royal Swedish Academy of Science; Swedish Museum of Natural History; plant geography; zoology; Linnaeus; Göran Wahlenberg;

    Sammanfattning : The purpose of the present dissertation is to study the relationship between travel as a form of knowledge and the natural history pursued at the Royal Academy of Science during the period 1790-1840. Primarily, this dissertation deals with the perception of travel as a form of knowledge which existed at the Royal Swedish Academy of Science, though a number of selected journeys are used to illustrate the era's shifting perceptions on travel. 4. 4. Kroppar i förvandling : Obstetriska och embryologiska samlingar vid Uppsala universitet, ca 1830–1930

    Författare :Helena Franzén; Solveig Jülich; Eva Åhrén; Lena Lennerhed; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; medical collections; reproduction; embryology; knowledge production; obstetrics; Uppsala University; maternity care; history of knowledge; Idé- och lärdomshistoria; History of Sciences and Ideas;

    Sammanfattning : Today, some of Uppsala University’s museums contain old specimens of embryos, fetuses, newborns, and women’s pelves. These have survived from obstetrical and embryological collections assembled in the “age of museum medicine,” when museum collections were central sites of medical research and education, alongside clinics and laboratories. 5. 5. Studies of declining populations - temporal genetic analyses of two arctic mammals

    Författare :Veronica Nyström; Anders Angerbjörn; Lisette Waits; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Vulpes lagopus; Mammuthus primigenius; population reduction; extinction; ancient DNA; mitochondrial DNA; microsatellites; genetic variation; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Many populations and species are threatened with extinction today. Understanding the extinction process and the factors behind population decline is therefore important. LÄS MER
