1. Predator responses to non-stationary rodent cycles
Sammanfattning : Regular fluctuations in population size, cycles, are common in small mammals and have important effects on predator populations and life histories. In this thesis, I identify long-term patterns and processes in two specialist predators, the arctic fox Vulpes lagopus and the rough-legged buzzard Buteo lagopus, in relation to their prey (lemmings and voles) and in the case of the arctic fox also to a dominant competitor, the red fox Vulpes vulpes. 2. Relationship between wildlife and tourism - interdisciplinary insights from Arctic fox tourism in Sweden
Sammanfattning : Interactions between wildlife and tourism can be studied from several different perspectives and the effects of such interactions can influence animals both positively and negatively with effects on both individual and population levels. This thesis takes an interdisciplinary approach, combining both natural and social perspectives, when studying the effects of tourism activity on a small population of the endangered arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus). 3. Distribution and abundance of genetic variation in the arctic fox
Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates how changes in population size and spatial movements of individuals have shaped the distribution and abundance of neutral genetic variation in the arctic fox. This is done through mitochondrial and microsatellite DNA analyses on samples covering most of the species’ distribution, but with special emphasis on Scandinavia. LÄS MER
4. Population fluctuations and life history consequences in the arctic fox
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I describe and explain drastic population fluctuations in the arctic fox Alopex lagopus (L.). I proceed to examine evolutionary consequences of unpredictable fluctuations in terms of life history strategies. In fluctuating populations, the risks and benefits of different behaviours vary with changes in population density. LÄS MER
5. Spatial and temporal population dynamics in the mountain tundra – mesopredator and prey
Sammanfattning : It is well known that competition, predation and fluctuating food resources can have strong effect on individual fitness and population dynamics. The complexity of natural systems can make it complicate to disentangle those processes, but environments with relatively simple food webs, and strong cyclic population dynamics offer contrasting conditions resembling experimental treatments.
