Sammanfattning : The Bok globule B335 is a small molecular cloud in the solar neighbourhood near the galactic plane. The aim for this three-paper-study is to construct and analyze the extinction for this globule. The method we apply is to use the light from field stars behind the cloud in broadband filters ranging from UV to the mid-infrared. LÄS MER
Sammanfattning : The aim of this investigation is to answer the question of why it is prima facie morally wrong to cause or contribute to the extinction of species. The first potential answer investigated in the book is that other species are instrumentally valuable for human beings. LÄS MER
Sammanfattning : The book contains the first part of an investigation aimed at finding out why it is morally wrong (at least prima facie) to cause species to go extinct. That it is morally wrong seems to be a very basic and widely held intuition. It seems reasonable that a moral theory worth taking seriously ought to be able to account for that intuition. LÄS MER
Sammanfattning : Species worldwide are subject to contractions in both abundance and geographical range, and their persistence in a changing environment may thus depend on the ability to survive in small and fragmented populations. Despite the urgent need to understand how extinction works, our knowledge of pre-extinction genetic processes is limited because techniques allowing population and conservation genomics to be studied in wild threatened populations have become available only recently. Sammanfattning : The use of Type Ia supernovae as standardisable candles for probing cosmological parameters with high precision requires good knowledge about how the supernova light is affected along the line of sight and how the intrinsic brightness varies between objects. The work in this thesis addresses these topics. LÄS MER
