11. Characterisation of Neisseria meningitidis from a virulence and immunogenic perspective that includes variations in novel vaccine antigens
Sammanfattning : Neisseria meningitidis, also referred to as meningococcus, is a Gram-negative diplococcal bacterium best known as an important cause of meningitis and septicaemia worldwide. Meningococcal disease is a rare but life-threatening illness that may progress to death despite optimal medical care including appropriate antibiotic therapy. LÄS MER
12. On receptor changes in cerebral arteries after subarachnoid haemorrhage
Sammanfattning : Overall the aim has been to characterise the in vitro upregulation of the 5-hydroxytryptamine 1B/1D (5-HT(1B/1D)) and endothelin (ET) receptors in the cerebral circulation as well as demonstrating phenotypic changes in a pathophysiological model mimicking subarachnoid haemorrhage. The first part describes receptor upregulation using organ culture of whole vessel segments from both rat and man. LÄS MER
13. Monitoring anti-infectives and antibiotic resistance genes : with focus on analytical method development, effects of antibiotics and national perspectives
Sammanfattning : Antibiotics are biologically active and are globally used in humans and animal medicine for treatment and in sub-therapeutic amounts as growth promoters in animal husbandry, aquaculture and agriculture. After excretion, inappropriate disposal and discharge from drug production facilities they enter into water bodies either as intact drugs, metabolites or transformed products. LÄS MER
14. Detection of immunoglobulin heavy chain gene rearrangement with PCR for MRD analysis in lymphoproliferative disorders
Sammanfattning : Immunoglobulin heavy chain (IGH) gene rearrangement occurs during early B-lymphocyte differentiation, assembling the different IGH gene segments to a functional gene, which can serve as a marker for study of lineage association and detection of Minimal Residual Disease (MRD) in clonal diseases deriving from B-lymphocytes or their early differentiation stages. Use of a molecular marker for the leukemic cells could help improve treatment by monitoring therapeutic efficacy, predicting relapse, and identifying very small amounts of tumour cells contaminating autografts after purging or enrichment of stem cells. 15. Development of Real-Time PCR Based Methods for Detection of Viruses and Virus Antibodies
Sammanfattning : Quantitative real-time PCR (QPCR) technology has been very useful for diagnosis of viral diseases. QPCR has recently reached a level of sensitivity, simplicity, and reproducibility which allows a large number of samples to be screened rapidly, make it a suitable tool for the clinical virology diagnostics.
