6. Perinatal brain injury - markers and mediators. Non-protein-bound iron and pro-inflammatory cytokines in newborn infants and neonatal pigs
Sammanfattning : Two groups of newborn infants have an increased risk for perinatal brain injury; preterm infants and term infants subjected to birth asphyxia. Experimental studies indicate that hypoxic-ischemic insults in the perinatal period initiate a secondary neurotoxic cascade including formation of toxic reactive oxygen species as well as an inflammatory response with elevated levels of potentially neurotoxic cytokines. 7. Novel Biomarkes in Acute Respiratory Failure and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Sammanfattning : Abstract Background: Dyspnea is a common manifestation of a range of conditions and diseases, sometimes with multiple contributing factors. A subgroup of these patients present with acute hypecapnic respiratory failure (AHRF) and are treated with non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV). LÄS MER
8. Vibrio cholerae modulates the immune defense of human gut mucosa
Sammanfattning : The key function of innate immunity is to sense danger signals and initiate effective responses as a defense mechanism against pathogens. Simultaneously, effector responses must be regulated to avoid excessive inflammation with resulting tissue damage. LÄS MER
9. The role of P fimbriae for Escherichia coli establishment and mucosal inflammation in the human urinary tract
Sammanfattning : Bacterial adhesion to the bladder mucosa is a critical step for the establishment of Escherichia coli bacteriuria. The P-fimbriae, encoded by the pap gene cluster, are considered as virulence factors but the mechanisms have been debated. This study defined the roles for P fimbriation during the early colonization of the human urinary tract. LÄS MER
10. Escherichia coli Fimbriae, Bacterial Persistence and Host Response Induction in the Human Urinary Tract
Sammanfattning : Urinary tract infections (UTI) are among the most common bacterial infections in humans. Symptomatic UTIs may be acute, recurrent or chronic but the most frequent form of UTI is asymptomatic bacteruria (ABU). In ABU, the mucosa remains inert, despite the presence of large bacterial numbers in urine. LÄS MER
