21. Cytokines and Neutrophils in the Urinary Tract Mucosa
Sammanfattning : This study investigated the urinary tract cytokine reponse to infection and the role of chemokines for neutrophil recruitment to the urinary tract. The results suggest that 1) IL-8 and TGFb are consitutively produced by uroepithelial cells in vivo, and that uroepithelial cells are stimulated to produce IL-1b and IL-6 by uropathogenic Escherichia coli. 22. Cytokines as diagnostic biomarkers in canine pyometra and sepsis
Sammanfattning : Sepsis is a syndrome with high morbidity, mortality and astronomical health care costs and it is challenging to diagnose both in humans and animals due to the lack of suitable diagnostic biomarkers. Although several types of proteins have been suggested as diagnostic biomarkers of sepsis, none of them were shown to be reliable for routine use in the clinical practice. LÄS MER
23. Inflammatory responses in minor and major surgical procedures
Sammanfattning : Surgical procedures promote an inflammatory response, correlating to the extent of the procedure performed and influencing outcome after surgery. The aims of the thesis were to investigate factors modulating the inflammatory response perioperatively and to evaluate cell salvage for indications so far not accepted in clinical practice. LÄS MER
24. Serine protease inhibitors in the upper and lower airways
Sammanfattning : Proteases and their inhibitors are implicated in the physiology and pathology of the airways. Protease inhibitors include those produced locally, such as secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor (SLPI), and those produced mainly by the liver that can reach the airways via passive diffusion, such as alpha1-antitrypsin (AAT). 25. Role of c-di-GMP signalling in bacterial-host interactions
Sammanfattning : Bacteria have various ways to sense environmental signals and to adapt their behavior and physiology through different signaling systems. Secondary messenger signaling, amplified by enzymatic activity, rapidly transmits a signal in the cell, resulting in allosteric functional control. LÄS MER
