  1. 1. Birth asphyxia : Fetal scalp blood sampling and risk factors for hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy

    Författare :Lena Liljeström; Maria Jonsson; Anna-Karin Wikström; Ulf Högberg; Andreas Herbst; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :asphyxia; fetal scalp blood sampling; hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy; obstetric emergencies; operative deliveries for fetal distress; overweight; short stature; Obstetrik och gynekologi; Obstetrics and Gynaecology;

    Sammanfattning : Preventing birth asphyxia is a major challenge in delivery care. The aims of this thesis were to evaluate fetal scalp blood sampling (FBS) and explore risk factors for moderate to severe neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). LÄS MER

  2. 2. Pathophysiology of intrauterine asphyxia

    Författare :Anna-Karin Welin; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :asphyxia; ECG; endotoxemia; fetal sheep; inflammation; melatonin; periventricular leukomalacia; preterm;

    Sammanfattning : Background: The premature infant is at increased risk of cerebral white matter damage, oftenreferred to as periventricular leucomalacia, PVL, which is associated with later developmentof cerebral palsy and cognitive impairment. The etiology of PVL remains unclear, but ischemia-reperfusion followed by generation of free radicals and intrauterine infections havebeen suggested to play an important role. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Perinatal brain injury - markers and mediators. Non-protein-bound iron and pro-inflammatory cytokines in newborn infants and neonatal pigs

    Författare :Karin Sävman; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Asphyxia; hypoxia; posthemorrhagic ventricular dilatation; preterm; newborn; perinatal; brain; cerebrospinal fluid; cytokines; IL-1ß; IL-6; IL-8; TNF-a; non-protein-bound-iron;

    Sammanfattning : Two groups of newborn infants have an increased risk for perinatal brain injury; preterm infants and term infants subjected to birth asphyxia. Experimental studies indicate that hypoxic-ischemic insults in the perinatal period initiate a secondary neurotoxic cascade including formation of toxic reactive oxygen species as well as an inflammatory response with elevated levels of potentially neurotoxic cytokines. 4. 4. Inflammation and ischemia in the developing brain - modifying effects of hyperoxia and adrenoceptor activation

    Författare :Tina Markus; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; adrenergic; preconditioning; excitotoxicity; tissue culture; hyperoxia; resuscitation; asphyxia; sensitization; TNF-alpha; inflammatory mediators; hippocampus; neonate;

    Sammanfattning : Inflammation and ischemia are common causes of perinatal brain damage. Ventilation with pure oxygen has previously been the prime choice during resuscitation following fetal asphyxia. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Targeting apoptosis-inducing factor as a novel therapeutic strategy for preventing perinatal brain injury

    Författare :Juan Rodriguez; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; AIF; neonatal; mouse; hypoxia-ischemia; AIF CypA complex; apoptosis; asphyxia; CHCHD4;

    Sammanfattning : Perinatal complications such as asphyxia can cause brain injuries that are often associated with subsequent neurological deficits. The mechanisms of perinatal brain injury are not fully understood, but mitochondria play a prominent role, not only due to their central function in metabolism, but also because many proteins with apoptosisrelated functions are located in the mitochondrion.
