1. Modeling DNA Damage
Sammanfattning : In this thesis methods of computational chemistry have been used to examine DNA damaging processes initiated by ionizing radiation, free radicals, or Low-Energy Electrons (LEE). The computational chemistry method based on quantum mechanics that has been mainly used here is the Density Functional Theory (DFT). LÄS MER
2. Metal Particles – Hazard or Risk? Elaboration and Implementation of a Research Strategy from a Surface and Corrosion Perspective
Sammanfattning : Do metal particles (including particles of pure metals, alloys, metal oxides and compounds) pose a hazard or risk to human health? In the light of this question, this thesis summarizes results from research conducted on metal particles, and describes the elaboration and implementation of an in vitro test methodology to study metal release from particles through corrosion and dissolution processes in synthetic biological media relevant for human exposure through inhalation/ingestion and dermal contact. Bioaccessible metals are defined as the pool of released metals from particles that potentially could be made available for absorption by humans or other organisms. LÄS MER
3. Digital Electrical DNA Sensing
Sammanfattning : Molecule detection is a workhorse in life sciences and medicine, for example in cancer diagnosis and virus and bacterial detection. DNA analysis can provide vital information about the state of a host organism and its medical and health condition. LÄS MER
4. Salivary gland neoplasms : studies on the cytoskeleton, the secretory apparatus and the nuclear DNA content
Sammanfattning : The heterogeneity of salivary gland neoplasms have made classification and prognostication of these tumours sometimes difficult, and the introduction of techniques, such as enzyme and carbohydrate histochemistry and electron microscopy have only to a certain extent increased our knowledge in these respects. In the present study immunohistochemical methods have been used to identify intermediate filament proteins (IFP) in normal fetal and adult parotid glands, as well as in salivary neoplasms. LÄS MER
5. Electric DNA arrays for determination of pathogenic Bacillus cereus
Sammanfattning : Silicon-based electric chip arrays were developed for characterization of Bacillus cereus with respect to the capacity to produce toxins involved in food poisoning and foodborne infections. Bacteria of the B. cereus group contain different sets of four toxins encoded by eight genes. LÄS MER
