    Sammanfattning : Do metal particles (including particles of pure metals, alloys, metal oxides and compounds) pose a hazard or risk to human health? In the light of this question, this thesis summarizes results from research conducted on metal particles, and describes the elaboration and implementation of an in vitro test methodology to study metal release from particles through corrosion and dissolution processes in synthetic biological media relevant for human exposure through inhalation/ingestion and dermal contact. Bioaccessible metals are defined as the pool of released metals from particles that potentially could be made available for absorption by humans or other organisms. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Evolutionary Mechanisms Shaping Bacterial Translation Termination

    Författare :Shreya Pundir; Suparna Sanyal; Martin Ott; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ribosome; Protein; Release Factor; Translation; Termination; Stop codon; Evolution; Mutation; Kinetics; Cryo-EM; Molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Life Sciences;

    Sammanfattning : Translation termination in bacteria involves precise reading of stop codons (UAA, UAG, UGA) and coordinated peptidyl-tRNA hydrolysis by the class-I release factors (RFs) on the ribosome (70S). This thesis investigates the evolutionary and post-translational modification mechanisms of these RFs and the concurrent effect on bacterial translation termination. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Amyloid beta aggregation kinetics : The role of intrinsic and extrinsic factors

    Författare :Xiaoting Yang; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Alzheimer s disease; Abeta; aggregation; kinetics; secondary nucleation;

    Sammanfattning : Cerebral senile plaque is one of the main pathologies of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The amyloid cascade hypothesis suggests that the aggregation of amyloid beta (Abeta) peptide is involved in the pathogenesis of AD, which is supported by the fact that Abeta overexpression or production of more aggregation-prone variants lead to early-onset dementia. Sammanfattning : Polyelectrolyte microgels are used as delivery vehicles for amphiphilic drugs in, e.g., treatments of liver cancer by a method called trans-arterial chemoembolization. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Structure evolution of spin-coated phase separated EC/HPC films

    Författare :Pierre Carmona; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; spin-coating; controlled drug release; porous film; drug delivery; confocal laser scanning microscope; kinetics; phase separation mechanisms; cellulose; biopolymer; phase separation;

    Sammanfattning : Porous phase-separated films made of ethylcellulose (EC) and hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) are commonly used for controlled drug release. The structure of these thin films is controlling the drug transport from the core to the surrounding liquid in the stomach or intestine. However, detailed understanding of the structure evolution is lacking. LÄS MER
