    Sammanfattning : This dissertation deals with the two languages of the deaf, sign language and Swedish. The aim of the dissertation can be expressed in four questions:• What ideas about the deaf and his or her education were influential during various time periods from 1809 to 1990 and what were the reactions of the deaf to the influence of these ideas?• What were the opinions of the teachers on introduction of bilingual education?• What was the pattern of communication in the schools for the deaf when bilingual education was introduced?• What function is fulfilled by bilingualism in the recognition of the deaf from an equality perspective?Four historical periods are analysed.     Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis is to examine how pupils in their pictures depict what it means to be a pupil in school today, and to explore the reflections and discussions that the images give rise to among teachers and student teachers.     Sammanfattning : This dissertation is the result of studies concerning the prerequisites for Finnish to survive in contemporary Sweden. When the Sweden Finnish parents want instruction in Finnish for their children the only choice available in Swedish municipal schools is between two language programs: one giving instruction in Swedish classes with 1-2 hours of home language training in Finnish per week, and the other giving instruction in and of Finnish in Finnish classes. The gender identity of the individual is produced in interaction with other persons and is also conditioned by cultural codes.
