2. Metal Particles – Hazard or Risk? Elaboration and Implementation of a Research Strategy from a Surface and Corrosion Perspective
Sammanfattning : Do metal particles (including particles of pure metals, alloys, metal oxides and compounds) pose a hazard or risk to human health? In the light of this question, this thesis summarizes results from research conducted on metal particles, and describes the elaboration and implementation of an in vitro test methodology to study metal release from particles through corrosion and dissolution processes in synthetic biological media relevant for human exposure through inhalation/ingestion and dermal contact. Bioaccessible metals are defined as the pool of released metals from particles that potentially could be made available for absorption by humans or other organisms. LÄS MER
3. On the role of surface properties for implant fixation : From finite element modeling to in vivo studies
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to gain a deeper understanding of the factors contributing to the fixation of bone-anchored implants, especially with regard to surface chemistry, surface topography and implant loading. The methodology used in the thesis ranges from systematic bench studies, computer simulations, experimental in vivo studies, to load cell measurements on patients treated with bone-anchored amputation prostheses. Sammanfattning : Knowledge about the biological responses provoked by the surface modification of titanium implants on the nanoscale is still in its infancy. Although in vitro studies claim superior effects considering higher adhesion and proliferation of osteoblasts in the short term and even differentiation towards the osteogenic cell lineage in the long term, these responses do not necessarily reflect the actual outcome in the complex in vivo environment. Sammanfattning : Over the last decade a number of emerging technologies have become available for the non-invasive study of skin anatomy and physiology.
