  3. 18. Interactive mechanism between beta-amyloid process, alfa7 nicotinic receptor, glial cell activation and oxidative stress in Alzheimer's disease

    Författare :Wen-Feng Yu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Abeta; Alzheimer s disease; astrocytes; brain development; nAChRs; neuritic plaques oxidative stress; transgenic mice; knockout mice;

    Sammanfattning : Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia with pathological features including the accumulation of neuritic plaques (NPs) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs). These degenerative processes are also accompanied by impaired cholinergic transmission, oxidative stress, activated glia and inflammation reaction. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Neuronal nicotinic receptor subtypes in normal ageing, Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia : influences of neuropathological mechanisms as studied in human autopsy brain and transgenic mice

    Författare :Amelia Marutle; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Ageing; Alzheimer s disease; P-amyloid; Nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subtypes; Postmortem human brain; Schizophrenia; Transgenic mice;

    Sammanfattning : Neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are transmitter-gated ion channel receptors which are widely distributed in the brain. They mediate the effects of several neurotransmitters including ACh, DA, 5-HT and NA and are important for many normal physiological functions in the brain and are also implicated in a number of CNS disorders, such as AD, PD, schizophrenia, Tourette's syndrome and familial epilepsy. 5. 20. Nicotinic effects on midbrain dopamine neurons : a dual mechanism of action

    Författare :Björn Schilström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :nicotine; dopamine; ventral tegmental area; glutamate; microdialysis; Fos expression; NMDA receptor; presynaptic;

    Sammanfattning : The neurons of the mesocorticolimbic dopamine system are located in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) in the mesencephalon and send their projections to forebrain structures, such as the prefrontal cortex, the amygdala and the nucleus accumbens. The dopamine system is important in regulating mood and motivation as well as cognitive function and appear to be primarily involved in drug dependence, since most drugs abused by man stimulate this system.
