11. Theoretical Studies of Protein-Ligand Interactions
Sammanfattning : The protein-ligand interaction is an important issue in rational drug design and protein function research. This thesis focuses on the study of protein-ligand interactions using various molecular modeling methods, which are used in combination to predict the binding modes and calculate the binding free energies of several important protein-ligand systems, as summarized below. 12. Simulating Functional Cycles and Drug Modulation in Ligand-gated Ion Channels
Sammanfattning : Understanding the intricate motions and conformational changes that govern biological processes remains a fascinating and challenging endeavor. The research presented in this thesis aims to elucidate the dynamic processes underlying biological functions, specifically focusing on the dynamics of pentameric ligand-gated ion channels (pLGICs), which play a crucial role in signal transduction within the brain. 13. Biochemical and immunological characterization of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor from Torpedo marmorata electric organ
Sammanfattning : Neuronal information transfer in vertebrate skeletal muscle and in the electric organ of e.g. Torpedo is mediated by acetylcholine (ACh). The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) complex translates the binding of ACh into permeability changes. LÄS MER
14. Maf transcription factors in beta cell function
Sammanfattning : Diabetes mellitus is metabolic disorder caused by a defect or lack of beta cell-produced insulin that controls blood glucose homeostasis. In addition to glucose, insulin secretion is regulated by the autonomic nervous system (ANS); the neurotransmitter acetylcholine as well as monoamines, such as dopamine, serotonin, melatonin and norepinephrine. 15. Pamoplantar Pustulosis. Pathogenetic Studies with Special Reference to the Role of Nicotine
Sammanfattning : Palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) is a chronic disease of unknown pathogenesis. Most of the patients were smokers. High prevalence of a number of autoimmune diseases was observed among the patients (thyroid disease 14%, gluten intolerance 8%, diabetes type 1 3%). Eosinophils and neutrophils were found in large numbers in the pustules. LÄS MER
