  1. 26. Antibiotic Resistance and Population Dynamics of Escherichia coli in Relation to a Large Scale Antibiotic Consumption Intervention

    Författare :Martin Sundqvist; Otto Cars; Gunnar Kahlmeter; Dan I Andersson; Jordi Vila; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; reversibility; trimethoprim; dfr; associated resistance; MLST; Infectious diseases; Infektionssjukdomar; Clinical bacteriology; Klinisk bakteriologi; Medical microbiology; Medicinsk mikrobiologi; Infectious Diseases; Infektionssjukdomar;

    Sammanfattning : Antibiotic resistance challenges the practice and development of modern medicine. The aim of this thesis was to test the hypothesis that antibiotic resistance is reversible once the selection pressure of an antibiotic is removed. LÄS MER

  2. 27. Polymorphism of the human complement component C3- genetic and immunological aspects

    Författare :Rolf Brönnestam; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Genetic polymorphism is by definition the occurrence in the same population of two or more alleles at one locus,each with a frequency high enough not to be maintained by recurrent mutation only (1). Among the human plasmaproteins two major categories of polymorphism have been described, allotypic and electrophoretic heterogeneity. LÄS MER

  3. 28. The oxidative stress response of Francisella tularensis

    Författare :Marie Honn; Anders Sjöstedt; Helena Lindgren; Andres Melendez; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Francisella tularensis; FupA; MglA; OxyR; ROS; oxidative stress; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Sammanfattning : Francisella tularensis is capable of infecting numerous cell types, including professional phagocytes. Upon phagocytosis, F. tularensis resides within the phagosome before escaping into the cytosol to replicate. Phagocytes constitute a hostile environment rich in ROS, which are employed as a means of killing pathogens. LÄS MER

  4. 29. Relation Between Drug Exposure and Selection of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria

    Författare :Sara K. Olofsson; Otto Cars; Dan I. Andersson; Diarmaid Hughes; George G. Zhanel; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Microbiology; Pharmacokinetics; Pharmacodynamics; Antibiotic resistance; Selection; Transmission; Mathematical model; Escherichia coli; Mikrobiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The worldwide increase in antibiotic resistance is a concern for public health. When the appropriate antibiotic dosage is determined, the priorities are efficacy and toxicity. The aim of this thesis was to gain knowledge about the most efficient dosing regimens in order to minimize the emergence and selection of antibiotic-resistant mutants. LÄS MER

  5. 30. Development and Stability of Antibiotic Resistance

    Författare :Maria Sjölund; Lars Engstrand; Dan Andersson; Pentti Huovinen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Microbiology; antibiotic resistance; selection; mutation frequency; biological cost of resistance; compensatory evolution; Helicobacter pylori; normal microbiota; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology; immunology; infectious diseases; Mikrobiologi; immunologi; infektionssjukdomar;

    Sammanfattning : Antibiotic resistance is of current concern. Bacteria have become increasingly resistant to commonly used antibiotics and we are facing a growing resistance problem. The present thesis was aimed at studying the impact of antibiotic treatment on pathogenic bacteria as well as on the normal human microbiota, with focus on resistance development. LÄS MER
