31. Uveal melanoma and macular degeneration : molecular biology and potential therapeutic applications
Sammanfattning : Uveal melanoma is the most common primary intraocular malignant tumor in adults with 30% to 50% of patients that ultimately succumb to metastatic disease, mainly to the liver. Although new diagnostic and therapeutic tools have been developed during the most recent years, only the eye conservation rate has been achieved, while the survival rate remains poor. LÄS MER
32. Peripherally administered choleocystokinin-8 increases neurotrophins in the brain
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to test the hypothesis that the gastric hormone Cholecystokinin-8 (CCK-8) can modulate the production of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) in the brain. NGF is the first discovered and the best characterized neurotrophic factor which plays a crucial role in the survival and development of basal forebrain cholinergic neurons (BFCN). LÄS MER
33. Aspects on the psychopharmacology of cholecystokinin
Sammanfattning : This thesis includes studies of the effect of mild stress on brain cholecystokinin (CCK), anatomy of markers for CCK-ergic transmission in the brain and the systemic effect of CCK receptor stimulation in a clinical test for anxiety and fear. CCK is a brain-gut peptide acting as a neurotransmitter in mammalian brain via CCKA (CCK1) and CCKB (CCK2) receptors. LÄS MER
34. Treatment of pain behavior after spinal cord injury in rats with special emphasis on the role of adenosine receptors
Sammanfattning : Central pain is a form of neuropathic pain occurring after injury or dysfunction in the central nervous system, including the spinal cord. Allodynia (pain to innocuous stimuli) to mechanical and cold stimulation is a common feature of central pain and it is often resistant to treatment. LÄS MER
35. Preservation of male fertility in childhood acute leukemia : an experimental study addressing novel strategies and putative risks
Sammanfattning : Although treatment of cancer in young boys with cytotoxic agents has long been known to cause infertility in the survivors, the mechanisms underlying drug-induced damage to the immature testis remain unclear. A number of clinical issues associated with transplantation of testicular germ cells or tissues also require clarification. LÄS MER
