21. Neurogenesis and transplantation in stroke-damaged brain
Sammanfattning : Stroke in young adult rodents triggers neurogenesis in the damaged striatum and intact hippocampus. as stroke happens frequently in aged individuals it is of great importance to know whether aging affects brain recovery mechanisms. LÄS MER
22. Renal Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury in Diabetes : Experimental Studies in the Rat
Sammanfattning : Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the leading causes of end stage renal failure. An increased susceptibility to renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R)-injury was found in DM rats. Unilateral renal ischemia for as short as 20 minutes led to an irreversible progressive injury in DM kidneys, whereas the injury in non-DM kidneys was almost reversible. LÄS MER
23. Fetal hematopoietic cells in early gestation : aspects in view of fetal transplantation
Sammanfattning : The fetus as a patient is a challenge. There are opportunities for early, sometimes life-saving procedures or there may be advantages in prenatal rather than postnatal intervention. This is the case in fetal hematopoietic cell (FHC) transplantation where conditions caused by a defect in blood cell formation may be life-threatening to the fetus. LÄS MER
24. Mast cells in bacterial infections
Sammanfattning : Mast cells are implicated in immunity towards bacterial infection, but the molecular mechanisms by which mast cells contribute to the host response are only partially understood. Previous studies have examined how mast cells react to purified bacterial cell wall components, such as peptidoglycan and lipopolysaccharide. LÄS MER
25. On Fever Mechanisms & Preoptic Signalling
Sammanfattning : Fever, a 1-4 °C elevation of the body temperature, is part of the systemic inflammatory response to infection or tissue damage, and it is believed to be a potent host defence. The underlying physiological mechanisms of the febrile response are one of the two main objectives in this thesis, where studies conducted in whole animals (rats and mice), chiefly aimed at clarifying the cytokine cascade in fever.
