26. Studies on polyomavirus virus-like particles : as vaccines and vectors for immune and gene therapy
Sammanfattning : Virus-like particles (VLPs) are similar to natural virus particles except that they lack viral genes. They have a similar cellular uptake to the natural virus from which they are derived but are non-infectious and can therefore not reproduce themselves. LÄS MER
27. Studies on molecular properties and functional regulation of terminal leukotriene C4 synthases and cysteinyl-leukotriene receptor signalling in human endothelium
Sammanfattning : The transformation of the unstable intermediate leukotriene (LT) A4 into the glutathione conjugate LTC4, the parent compound of LTD4 and LTE4, is catalysed by leukotriene C4 synthase (LTC4S) as well as microsomal glutathione S-transferase type 2 (MGST2) and type 3 (MGST3). Together, these eicosanoids also known as cysteinyl leukotrienes (cys-LT) are key mediators of immediate hypersensitivity reactions. LÄS MER
28. Intake inhibition by neuropeptide Y
Sammanfattning : This thesis is an attempt to elucidate some neuroendocrine concomitants to Anorexia Nervosa (AN), an eating disorder that develops in women. In particular, the thesis has examined the effect of neuropeptide Y (NPY) on food intake under experimental conditions in male and female rats. LÄS MER
29. Physiological and morphological aspects of the glomerular barrier in health and disease. Results based on experimental studies in the rat
Sammanfattning : Tremendous amounts of fluid are filtered every day through the kidneys. The anastomosing capillary loops surrounded by Bowman s capsule, forming the glomerulus, function in accordance with the interplay between the hydrostatic and the colloid osmotic pressure. The result of the action of these mechanisms is the production of primary urine. LÄS MER
30. Modulation of inflammatory mediators during experimental bacterial meningitis
Sammanfattning : Bacterial meningitis is a worldwide health problem with high morbidity and mortality mainly caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria meningitidis and Streptococcus pneumoniae. It is an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (eNS) initiated by cell wall or membrane components from the bacteria. LÄS MER
