Sammanfattning : This case study explores how geo-political power structures influence and/or determine the conception, acceptance and maintenance of what is considered to be valid archaeological knowledge. The nature of this contingency is exemplified through an examination of how the prehistory of Norrland, a region traditionally considered and portrayed as peripheral vis-à-vis the centre-South, was interpreted and presented by Swedish archaeologists during the 20th century. Sammanfattning : The dissertation is an investigation of Sirkas-sijdda, a Sámi hunting society in the interior of northern Sweden in the period AD 1-1600. The principal sources are historical evidence for the period around 1600, which saw the beginnings of colonial settlement and reindeer pastoralism, and for the earlier period archaeological data from excavations. By outsiders however, were they missionaries during the 17th century or researchers during 20th, the Sami drum has often been demonised as ‘devilish’ or belitted as ‘primitive’, and labelled ‘troll-drum’.
