  1. 1. Hydrophobic interactions of serpins

    Författare :Sabina Janciauskiene; Enheten för kroniska inflammatoriska och degenerativa sjukdomar; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Proteiner; enzymology; polymerization.; Proteins; conformational polymorphism; hydrophobic interaction; amyloid fibrils; Alzheimer`s peptide Ab; alpha-1-antichymotrypsin; C-terminal peptide; lithocholic acid; cholesterol; Key words: alpha-1-antitrypsin; bile acids; enzymologi;

    Sammanfattning : The proteins of the serpin family are primarily but not exclusively proteinase inhibitors, which share a common, similar structure. It is known that this structure undergoes major conformational changes upon cleavage in the serpin reactive site loop, and that these changes include rearrangements within the hydrophobic core of the molecule. 2. 2. RNA in model lipid membranes - interactions in bulk and at surfaces

    Författare :Agnes Michanek; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ssRNA; RNA origami; dsDNA; selfassembly phospholipids; model membranes; monolayer; QCM-D; DSC; Neutron reflectometry; hydrophobic interaction; cationic surfactants; sphingosine; phase behavior;

    Sammanfattning : The work presented in the thesis “RNA in model lipid membranes- interactions in bulk and at surfaces” aims to characterize the interaction between RNA and model membranes with different properties as well as to determine if ssRNA associate with model membranes in different ways. Several techniques have been used to characterize these systems, including quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D), Langmuir film balance in combination with neutron reflectometry and fluorescence microscopy as well as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). 3. 3. Partitioning of Drugs and Lignin Precursor Models into Artificial Membranes

    Författare :Elisabet Boija; Gunnar Johansson; Per Lundahl; Christine Lagerquist Hägglund; Marja-Liisa Riekkola; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Biochemistry; Bilayer disk; Capillary electrophoresis; Detergent; Drug; Electrostatic interaction; Hydrophobic interaction; Immobilized liposome chromatography; Lignin; Lignin precursor model; Liposome; Membrane model; Octanol water partitioning; Partitioning; Phospholipid; Phospholipid bilayer; Sterol; Biokemi;

    Sammanfattning : The main aim of this thesis was to characterize membrane-solute interactions using artificial membranes in immobilized liposome chromatography or capillary electrophoresis. The partitioning of a solute into a cell membrane is an essential step in diffusion across the membrane. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Nanosized Bilayer Disks as Model Membranes for Interaction Studies

    Författare :Anna Lundquist; Katarina Edwards; Marja-Liisa Riekkola; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Disk; disc; lipid bilayer; PEG-lipid; model membrane; interaction; partitioning; drug; liposome; cryo-TEM; neutron scattering; capillary electrophoresis; immobilization; biosensor; membrane protein; melittin; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Sammanfattning : PEG-lipid stabilized bilayer disks have been found in lipid mixtures containing polyethylene glycol (PEG)-lipids where the combination of a high bending rigidity and low PEG-lipid/lipid miscibility favours disk formation. The disks are planar and circular in shape and their long-term stability is excellent. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Hydrophobic and superhydrophobic coatings for corrosion protection of steel

    Författare :Lina Ejenstam; Per M. Claesson; Agne Swerin; Jinshan Pan; Orlando Rojas; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :Superhydrophobic coating; hydrophobic coating; corrosion protection; contact angles; electrochemical measurements; surface characterization; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Since metals in general, and steels in particular, are vital construction materials in our modern society, the corrosion protection of said materials is of great importance, both to ensure safety and to reduce costs associated to corrosion. Previously, chromium (VI) and other harmful substances were effectively used to provide corrosion protection to steel, but since their use was heavily regulated around year 2000, no coating has yet been developed that, in a fully satisfactory manner, replaces their corrosion protective properties.
