11. Genes implicated in the development of obesity and obesity-related disease
Sammanfattning : Obesity is a major health problem because of its dramatic increase in prevalence and the association of obesity with type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, hypertension and stroke. Although mutations in certain genes have been shown to cause obesity, the molecular mechanisms underlying obesity and obesity-related disease are still largely unknown. LÄS MER
12. IL-6 and GLP-1 in body fat regulating parts of the CNS in healthy mice
Sammanfattning : It has previously been shown that mice lacking interleukin-6 (IL-6) develop mature onset obesity. The weight-suppressing effects of IL-6 have been assumed to be exerted at a central level, as supported by the fact that ICV- injections, but not peripheral injections of IL-6, increases energy expenditure and decreases body fat in rodents. 13. Nitric oxide in central nervous structures associated with water balance and micturition
Sammanfattning : The role of nitric oxide (NO) in the central control of water balance and micturition has not yet been established. In the present thesis, where female rats were used, neuronal NO synthase (nNOS) distribution was studied in structures of the central nervous system known to be associated with the above mentioned control. 14. Craniopharyngioma. Morbidity and Structural Changes in the Brain
Sammanfattning : Hypothalamus (HT) is a brain structure which serves as a coordination center for several vital body functions. Craniopharyngioma (CP) is a pituitary tumor with high morbidity, primarily due to HT lesion. LÄS MER
15. Central and Peripheral Neuroendocrine Factors in Cancer-Associated Anorexia and Cachexia
Sammanfattning : Cancer anorexia-cachexia syndrome (CACS) develops in response to tumor-host biochemical interactions. A loss of appetite (anorexia) and increased metabolism results in a progressive wasting of adipose and skeletal muscle tissues (cachexia). LÄS MER
