  1. 1. Aspects of regular long-term endurance exercise in adolescents, with focus on cardiac size and function, hormones, and the immune system

    Författare :Louise Rundqvist; Maria Faresjö; Peter Blomstrand; Katarina Steding-Ehrenborg; Jönköping University; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; adolescence; endurance-trained; cardiac dimension; cardiac systolic function; cardiac diastolic function; growth hormone; immune response; echocardiography; biomarkers; cytokines; chemokines; insulin-like growth factor 1; type 1 diabetes-related autoantigen; proinsulin;

    Sammanfattning : The long-term effects of starting high-intensity training at younger ages are largely unknown. The present studies focused on adolescents who had performed regular endurance exercise for several years at an elite level and compared those subjects with a control group of adolescents of similar age and sex who had not engaged in regular exercise. 2. 2. Cardiac function and long-term volume load : Physiological investigations in endurance athletes and in patients operated on for aortic regurgitation

    Författare :Kristofer Hedman; Eva Nylander; Éva Tamás; Lars Brudin; Mats Börjesson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Background and aims. The heart is a remarkably adaptable organ, continuously changing its output to match metabolic demands and haemodynamic load. But also in long-term settings, such as in chronic or repeated volume load, there are changes in cardiac dimensions and mass termed cardiac hypertrophy. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Sudden cardiac death among the young in Sweden 1992-1999 : from epidemiology to support of the bereaved

    Författare :Aase Wisten; Johan Herlitz; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Epidemiology; Symptoms; Sudden cardiac death; Young; Prevention; Sweden; Electrocardiogram; Forensic diagnosis; Athletic activities; Risk factors; Familiy; Bereavement; Public health science; Folkhälsovetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Sudden cardiac death (SCD) in a young person is a rare but tragic event, and the potential of prevention is unknown. The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the prevention by analysing SCD in the young in Sweden during the period 1992-1999. Data of SCD in the young based on a national registry is not previously reported. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Lung mechanics in the aging lung and in acute lung injury. Studies based on sinusoidal flow modulation

    Författare :Ulrika Bitzén; Lund Klinisk fysiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Diagnostics; Diagnostik; acute lung injury; lung mechanics; acute respiratory distress syndrome; intensivvård; Anestesiologi; intensive care; Anaesthesiology; Andningsorganen; Respiratory system; Fysiologi; Physiology; flow regulation; method; lung resistance; compliance; aging;

    Sammanfattning : Knowledge about lung mechanics is of interest in intensive care to adjust mechanical ventilation and in the lung laboratory for diagnostics and evaluation of patients with various kinds of respiratory diseases. In mechanical ventilation a single inspiratory elastic pressure-volume (Pel/V) curve is difficult to interpret due to continuing re-expansion of collapsed lung units over a large pressure interval. 5. 5. Cognitive function and cardiovascular disease in relation to hypertension and adaptive behavior in the serial Color Word Test. Results from population study "Men born in 1914" in Malmö, Sweden

    Författare :Lena André-Petersson; Kardiovaskulär forskning - epidemiologi; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Cardiovascular system; Psykologi; Psychology; Color Word Test; Myocardial infarction; Stroke; Cardiac event; Adaptive behavior; Cognition; Hypertension; Kardiovaskulära systemet; Public health; epidemiology; Folkhälsa; epidemiologi;

    Sammanfattning : "Men born in 1914" is a prospective cohort study on the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease. The study is run by the Department of Community Medicine, Lund University, Malmö. Five hundred men participated in the study when it started with a baseline examination in 1982/83. The men were then 68 years old. LÄS MER
