1. In vivo properties of neural stem cells after transplantation into the rat brain-Studies of phenotypic differentiation and functional integration using cell-specific labelling and electrophysiological techniques
Sammanfattning : In the present thesis, we have examined the in vivo properties of in vitro expanded human and rat neural stem-and progenitor cells after transplantation into the neonatal and adult rat brain. The survival and differentiation of the grafted cells were assessed using species-specific antisera, and pre-labelling with the reporter gene green fluorescent protein (GFP). LÄS MER
2. Zinc-enriched neurons in the spinal cord, cerebellum and peripheral sympathetic system
Sammanfattning : Zinc ions are abundant in the nervous system and are involved in many biological functions. Most zinc is tightly bound to macromolecules, whereas a small fraction of zinc exists in synaptic vesicles of the zinc-enriched (ZEN) neurons, and can be visualized using various histochemical techniques, including autometallography (AMG). 3. Cell Replacement Therapy for Parkinson's Disease: Potential for Circuitry Repair
Sammanfattning : The derivation of dopamine neurons from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) now offers a promising alternative to fetal tissue for cell replacement therapy (CRT) in Parkinson´s disease (PD). Using the appropriate chemical cues in vitro, hESCs can be patterned towards bona-fide ventral midbrain (VM) DA neurons that survive, reinnervate, release DA and provide functional recovery when transplanted into rodent and non-human primate models of PD. 4. Spinal cord repair strategies
Sammanfattning : Regeneration of long fiber tracts does not occur spontaneously in the adult mammalian brain or spinal cord. The present work is an attempt to develop a repair strategy that may overcome this lack of recovery and apply it to spinal cord injury. LÄS MER
5. Cell therapy for spinal cord injury, studies of motor and sensory systems
Sammanfattning : Spinal cord injury represents a significant medical concern, affecting thousands of individuals each year. The majority of victims are young males harmed by traffic accidents, violence, and falls. Severe spinal cord injury interupts nerve fiber pathways connecting the brain and the rest of the body.
