1. Zinc-enriched neurons in the spinal cord, cerebellum and peripheral sympathetic system
Sammanfattning : Zinc ions are abundant in the nervous system and are involved in many biological functions. Most zinc is tightly bound to macromolecules, whereas a small fraction of zinc exists in synaptic vesicles of the zinc-enriched (ZEN) neurons, and can be visualized using various histochemical techniques, including autometallography (AMG). 2. JNK/c-Jun Signaling and Peripheral Nerve Regeneration
Sammanfattning : The events associated with axonal injury in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) have been described in detail. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the regenerative response, or neuronal cell death, following axonal injury are poorly understood. LÄS MER
3. Therapeutic and functional studies in animal models of Alzheimer's disease
Sammanfattning : Senile plaques (Aβ) and neurofibrillary tangles (tau) are pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). If and how the formation of these deposits are mechanistically linked remains mainly unknown. In recent years, the focus has shifted from insoluble protein deposits to soluble aggregates of Aβ and tau. LÄS MER
4. Gene Expression Changes and Brain Plasticity after Experimental Stroke
Sammanfattning : Stroke is the most common life-threatening neurological disease and ranks as the third leading cause of death in major industrialized countries. It is also the leading cause of serious long-term disability and about sixty percent of survivors have disabilities in their extremities. LÄS MER
5. Neural crest in development and repair
Sammanfattning : This thesis is focused on several aspects of neural crest biology, largely related to two main issues: 1) understanding its mechanisms of migration and 2) analyzing the potential of neural crest stem cells or their derivatives for nervous system repair. If repair is the aim, knowledge of both timing and events leading to axonal degeneration is required in order to block it and/or increase regeneration outcome. LÄS MER
