1. In vivo properties of neural stem cells after transplantation into the rat brain-Studies of phenotypic differentiation and functional integration using cell-specific labelling and electrophysiological techniques
Sammanfattning : In the present thesis, we have examined the in vivo properties of in vitro expanded human and rat neural stem-and progenitor cells after transplantation into the neonatal and adult rat brain. The survival and differentiation of the grafted cells were assessed using species-specific antisera, and pre-labelling with the reporter gene green fluorescent protein (GFP). LÄS MER
2. Immunofluorescence Investigation on Neuroendocrine Secretory Protein 55 (NESP55) in Nervous Tissues
Sammanfattning : The chromogranin family is a group of acidic, soluble, and heat-stable proteins widespread in various neuronal, neuroendocrine and endocrine tissues, where they are subcellullarly located in the secretory granules, participating in the formation of the granules. Extracellularly, chromogranins may act as protein precursors, proteolytically processed to various small bioactive peptides. LÄS MER
3. Cervicothalamic tract termination and its cortical connections: anatomical studies in cats and ferrets
Sammanfattning : The termination and cortical connections of the cervicothalamic tract (CTT) were studied by neuroanatomical tract tracing techniques in cats and ferrets. After injections of wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase conjugate or biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) into the cat lateral cervical nucleus (LCN), the most abundant CTT termination is present in the ventral posterior lateral nucleus (VPL). 4. Spinal cord repair strategies
Sammanfattning : Regeneration of long fiber tracts does not occur spontaneously in the adult mammalian brain or spinal cord. The present work is an attempt to develop a repair strategy that may overcome this lack of recovery and apply it to spinal cord injury. LÄS MER
5. Neuronal tracers for fine caliber spinal primary afferents and their response to peripheral nerve injury
Sammanfattning : The isolectin B4 from Griffonia simplicifolia I (B4) and soybean agglutinin from the plant Glycine max (SBA), have been shown to bind to rat small-diameter dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons, and to fibers and presumed terminals in laminae I-II of the spinal cord dorsal horn. In the present thesis, these lectins and/or their horseradish peroxidase (HRP) conjugates, have been investigated in the rat with regard to their usefulness as selective neuronal markers of and axonally transported tracers for somatic and/or visceral spinal primary afferents with fine caliber, including unmyelinated, axons.
