  1. 1. Spinal cord repair strategies

    Författare :Henrich Cheng; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Spinal cord; injury; paraplegia; repair; regeneration; nerve graft; fibrin glue; aFGF; GDNF; gait; axonal tracing Henrich Cheng; 1996;

    Sammanfattning : Regeneration of long fiber tracts does not occur spontaneously in the adult mammalian brain or spinal cord. The present work is an attempt to develop a repair strategy that may overcome this lack of recovery and apply it to spinal cord injury. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Histochemical, biochemical and electrophysiological studies on dorsal root ganglion cultures : focusing on galanin, neuropeptide Y and glutamate

    Författare :Nora Kerekes; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Acute and long-term DRG cultures; aFGF; BDNF; bFGF; bradykinin; excitability; galanin; glutamate; leukemia inhibitory factor; neuropeptide Y; : NGF; regeneration; whole cell patch clamp.;

    Sammanfattning : Galanin (Gal) and neuropeptide Y (NPY) are two peptides, which are strongly up- regulated in a population of dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons after peripheral nerve injury (axotomy). Both peptides may be involved in the control of pain sensation, especially after nerve injury (neuropathic pain). LÄS MER

  3. 3. Matrix metalloproteases and cell motility in malignant mesothelioma

    Författare :Zhiwen Liu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Matrix; metalloproteases MMPs ; cell motility; growth factors; malignant mesothelioma; invasion;

    Sammanfattning : Invasion and metastasis of malignant tumor cells requires destruction of and migration through extracellular matrix (ECM) such as basement membrane and interstitial stroma. The ECM-degrading proteases produced by tumor cells and stromal cells and cell motility play a crucial role in this process. LÄS MER

  4. 4. On CNS injury and olfactory ensheathing cell engraftment strategies

    Författare :I-Hui Lee; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The intrinsic regenerative capacity of the adult mammalian central nervous system (CNS) is limited because of lack of nerve-growth stimulatory factors and presence of an insurmountable molecular environment for injured axons. This thesis aims to study neural regeneration following adult CNS injury, using rodent models of spinal cord injury, dorsal root avulsion, and Parkinson s disease. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Regulation of CGRP expression in rat spinal motoneurons

    Författare :Fredrik Piehl; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; motoneuron; axotomy; peptides; CGRP; trophic factor; FGF; IGF; BDNF; CNTF; GAP-43; cell culture; plasticity; mRNAregulation; regeneration;

    Sammanfattning : The normal distribution and lesion-induced changes in the expression of neuropeptides and growth-related proteins, with special reference to calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP),were studied in the motor system of the rat. In addition, factors that influence the expression of CGRP in motoneurons were identified. LÄS MER
