1. Treatment failure in pediatric acute myeloid leukemia: factors associated with frequency and outcome of resistant disease and relapse
Sammanfattning : Although the prognosis for childhood acute myeloid leukemia (AML) has improved over the last decades to a survival of over 70%, still 30-40 % relapse and 5-10% experience resistant disease with poor prognosis. The aim of this thesis was to perform a detailed analysis of disease characteristics and treatment in children with relapsed and resistant AML to provide means to improve prognosis. LÄS MER
2. Liposuction in Dercum's disease. Clinical studies regarding Dercum's disease and the effect of liposuction
Sammanfattning : Dercum’s disease is a rare condition characterised by obesity, chronic pain (>3 months) in the adipose tissue and a number of diffuse associated symptoms, such as fatigue and malaise. The aetiology of the disease is unknown. The experienced pains are often disabling and resistant to most tried treatments, such as analgesics. LÄS MER
3. Characterization of Physiological and Pathological Alpha-Synuclein : Implications for Parkinson’s Disease and Related Disorders
Sammanfattning : Aggregated alpha-synuclein is the main component of Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites, intraneuronal inclusions found in the brains of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) patients (synucleinopathies). Alpha-synuclein is a presynaptic protein, which is most commonly an unfolded monomer in its physiological state. LÄS MER
4. Respiratory Tract Infections: Aspects of Aetiology, Virulence, and Communicable Disease Control
Sammanfattning : The paediatric nasopharyngeal flora is regarded as the largest reservoir for Streptococcus pneumoniae, and the carrier state is always antecedent to infection and a prerequisite for dispersion of these bacteria. Pneumococci are the predominant aetiology of bacterial respiratory tract infections and a major cause of morbidity and mortality, in the most severe cases due to invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD; mainly sepsis and meningitis). 5. Neuronal Cell Death and Restoration in the Basal Ganglia: Implications for Huntington's and Parkinson's diseases
Sammanfattning : Huntington's disease (HD) is a hereditary neurodegenerative disorder presenting with chorea, dementia and extensive striatal neuronal death. The mechanism through which the widely expressed mutant huntingtin mediates striatal neurotoxicity is unknown. Excitotoxicity, i.e. LÄS MER
