11. The cellular processing of the endocannabinoid anandamide and its pharmacological manipulation
Sammanfattning : Anandamide (arachidonoyl ethanolamide, AEA) and 2-arachidonoyl glycerol (2-AG) exert most of their actions by binding to cannabinoid receptors. The effects of the endocannabinoids are short-lived due to rapid cellular accumulation and metabolism, for AEA, primarily by the enzymes fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH). LÄS MER
12. Evolutionary and Pharmacological Studies of NPY and QRFP Receptors
Sammanfattning : The neuropeptide Y (NPY) system consists of 3-4 peptides and 4-7 receptors in vertebrates. It has powerful effects on appetite regulation and is involved in many other biological processes including blood pressure regulation, bone formation and anxiety. LÄS MER
13. Function, Pharmacology, Evolution and Anatomical Localization of G Protein-Coupled Receptors and Solute Carriers
Sammanfattning : The G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and solute carriers (SLC) are two large families of membrane-bound proteins. The aim of this study was to characterize these two families in terms of evolution and function. LÄS MER
14. Benefits of Non-Linear Mixed Effect Modeling and Optimal Design : Pre-Clinical and Clinical Study Applications
Sammanfattning : Despite the growing promise of pharmaceutical research, inferior experimentation or interpretation of data can inhibit breakthrough molecules from finding their way out of research institutions and reaching patients. This thesis provides evidence that better characterization of pre-clinical and clinical data can be accomplished using non-linear mixed effect modeling (NLMEM) and more effective experiments can be conducted using optimal design (OD). 15. From Food Preference to Craving : Behavioural Traits and Molecular Mechanisms
Sammanfattning : Preference for palatable and energy-dense foods may be a risk factor for body weight gain and has both genetic and environmental components. Once obesity develops in an individual, weight loss is difficult to achieve. LÄS MER
