  1. 1. Meiotic Recombination in Human and Dog : Targets, Consequences and Implications for Genome Evolution

    Författare :Jonas Berglund; Matthew Webster; Kerstin Lindblad-Toh; Leif Andersson; Nadia Singh; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; recombination; biased gene conversion; CpG island; copy number variation; substitutions; methylation; Bioinformatics; Bioinformatik; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution; Molekylär genetik; Molecular Genetics;

    Sammanfattning : Understanding the mechanism of recombination has important implications for genome evolution and genomic variability. The work presented in this thesis studies the properties of recombination by investigating the effects it has on genome evolution in humans and dogs. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Evolution of MHC Genes and MHC Gene Expression

    Författare :Karin Berggren Bremdal; Hans Ellegren; Jennifer Seddon; Philip Hedrick; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; major histocompatibilty complex; dog leukocyte antigen; balancing selection; linkage disequilibrium; promoter; diabetes mellitus; Canis familiaris; Canis lupus; Erinaceus europaeus; Erinaceus concolor; Genetics; Genetik; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Sammanfattning : Polymorphism in coding regions and regions controlling gene expression is the major determinant of adaptive differences in natural populations. Genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) possess a high level of genetic variation, which is maintained by selection over long coalescence times. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Detecting Sex and Selection in Ancient Cattle Remains Using Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms

    Författare :Emma M Svensson; Anders Götherström; Juha Kantanen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANITIES; HUMANIORA; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; HUMANIORA; NATURAL SCIENCES; HUMANITIES; aurochs; cattle; ancient DNA; SNP; pyrosequencing; selection; Bos taurus; Historical osteology; Historisk osteologi; Genetics; Genetik; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Sammanfattning : All contemporary taurine cattle originated some 10,000 years ago when their wild ancestor, the aurochs, was domesticated in the Near East. Although the aurochs was widespread also in Europe, there is no evidence for a local domestication. The aurochs has been extinct since 1627 and therefore little is known about its biology. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Rates and patterns of molecular evolution in avian genomes

    Författare :Paulina Bolívar; Hans Ellegren; Carina F. Mugal; Mikkel Heide Schierup; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular evolution; recombination; GC-biased gene conversion; Hill-Robertson interference; effective population size; dN dS; distribution of fitness effects; avian genomes; collared flycatcher; sex chromosomes; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Sammanfattning : Evolution is the change in inherited characteristics of a population through subsequent generations. The interplay of several evolutionary mechanisms determines the rate at which this change occurs. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Translational research of the quaking gene : Focusing on the conjunction between development and disease

    Författare :Bryn Farnsworth; Lina Emilsson; Roman Chrast; Uppsala universitet; []

    Sammanfattning : Quaking (QKI) is an RNA binding protein involved in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. Originally identified as the cause of hypomyelination in a mouse mutant, it has since been consistently implicated in a wide range of neurological diseases. LÄS MER
