  1. 6. Harm and harm reduction in smokeless tobacco users. An in vitro and clinical study

    Författare :Mats Wallström; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cessation; nicotine replacement; smokeless tobacco; immunotoxicity; oral mucosa; snuff; reversibility; Langerhans cells; rat oral epithelium; nicotine;

    Sammanfattning : Background: This thesis describes the effects of smokeless tobacco (ST) and its derivatives on the oral mucosa; the development of, and results of applying a cessation program for snuff users with long and extensive exposure; and the persistent clinical and histomorphological changes after cessation. Methods: Three of the studies were open prospective non-randomized clinical intervention trials using nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) of either 4 mg nicotine chewing gum or 2 mg nicotine lozenges. Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns the effects of low-dose oral contraceptives (OCs) on endogenous hormones, insulin-like growth-factor-1 (IGF-1), sexual hormone binding globulin (SHBG), and body constitution in two groups of healthy women aged 1925 who had never been pregnant. Prolactin concentrations were elevated in a subgroup of present and former users. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Helicobacter pylori adhesion and patho-adaptation : the role of BabA and SabA adhesins in persistent infection and chronic inflammation

    Författare :Jafar Mahdavi; Henrik Clausen; Umeå universitet; []

    Sammanfattning : Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a human-specific gastric pathogen which is responsible for a spectrum of diseases ranging from superficial gastritis to gastric and duodenal ulceration, and which is also highly associated with gastric cancer. The pathogenesis of severe gastric disorders caused by H. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Adaptation of Helicobacter pylori Adherence Properties in Promotion of Host Tropism and Inflammatory Disease

    Författare :Marina Aspholm; Rino Rappuoli; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :H. pylori; BabA; SabA; adhesin; blood group antigens; sialylated; phase variation; hemagglutination; selectin; adaptation; odontologi; Odontology;

    Sammanfattning : Being among the most prevalent of persistent infectious agents in humans worldwide, Helicobacter pylori induces chronic inflammation (gastritis), which may progress to peptic ulceration and stomach cancer. The ability to adhere to the gastric mucosa is considered to be both a colonization and virulence property of H. pylori. For adherence, H. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Starch Microparticles as an Oral Vaccine Adjuvant with Emphasis on the Differentiation of the Immune Response

    Författare :Linda Stertman; Ingvar Sjöholm; Kjell-Olov Grönvik; Uppsala universitet; []
