  1. 6. Genetic factors and the role of the NMDA receptor in pain modulation and the effect of opioids

    Författare :Aida Plesan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :pain; NMDA-receptor antagonists; genetic difference; rat strain; opioids; methadone; morphine tolerance; neuropathic pain;

    Sammanfattning : Pain perception and the response to opioid analgesics are determined by a number of factors, among which genetic variability and the activation of the NMDA-receptor for glutamate play an important role. The effects of two clinically available NMDA-receptor antagonists, ketamine (KET) and dextromethorphan (DEX), were evaluated on an animal model of acute nociception, the hot plate test, and on human experimental acute ischemic pain. 2. 7. On the role of NMDA receptor subunits in the acute and chronic effects of nicotine

    Författare :Alexander Kosowski; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :PCR; microdialysis; Wistar;

    Sammanfattning : Nicotine is considered the main dependence-producing constituent in tobacco products. In analogy with other drugs of abuse, nicotine enhances dopamine (DA) neurotransmission within the mesocorticolimbic DA system. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Influenza A virus infection and NMDA receptor function : a behavioral and molecular study of relevance for schizophrenia

    Författare :Simret Beraki; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Schizophrenia; Influenza A virus; NMDA receptor; glutamate; cognition; learning; memory; hippocampus; water maze; mice; emotional; social interaction; gene expression; brain; behavior; phencyclidine; elevated plus-maze;

    Sammanfattning : Schizophrenia is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by positive and negative symptoms, as well as cognitive dysfunctions. There is no single cause of schizophrenia, instead complex combinations of genetic and environmental factors may contribute to the disorder, including exposure to viral infections or other environmental insults during early life. 4. 9. Physiopathological aspects of NMDA transmission in the basal ganglia : in vitro and in vivo release studies

    Författare :Michele Morari; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :basal ganglia; NMDA; dizocilpine; microdialysis; slices; synaptosomes; dopamine; acetylcholine; glutamate; GABA; 6OH-dopamine;

    Sammanfattning : N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) is an excitatory amino acid selectively acting on a subclass of glutamate receptors (the NMDA ionotropic receptor) which has been involved in many of the physiological and pathological effects of glutamate in the CNS. The basal ganglia are particularly enriched in NMDA receptors and NMDA receptor activation in the basal ganglia has been involved in the expression of motor behaviour. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Importance of endogenous kynurenic acid in brainm catecholaminergic processes and in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia

    Författare :Sophie Erhardt; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Schizophrenia; kynurenic acid; nicotine; VTA; dopamine; NMDA-receptors;

    Sammanfattning : Kynurenic acid is a metabolite of tryptophan and the only known naturally occurring NMethylD-Aspartic acid (NMDA)-receptor antagonist (at the co-agonist glycine site) in the human brain. The aim of the present work was to investigate the physiological and pharmacological significance of endogenous kynurenic acid as well as its putative pathophysiological implications. LÄS MER
