6. The G-protein coupled receptor CMKLR1/ChemR23: Studies on gene regulation, receptor ligand activation, and HIV/SIV co-receptor function
Sammanfattning : In all higher organisms, there is a need for intercellular communication. G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs), located on the cell surface, play an important role in this communication. Cells synthesize and release signalling molecules (ligands), which produce a specific response only in those cells that have a receptor for that ligand. LÄS MER
7. Characterization and Evolution of Transmembrane Proteins with Focus on G-protein coupled receptors in Pre-vertebrate Species
Sammanfattning : G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are one of the largest protein families in mammals. GPCRs are instrumental for hormonal and neurotransmitter signalling and are important in all major physiological systems of the body. LÄS MER
8. Advances in Ligand Binding Predictions using Molecular Dynamics Simulations
Sammanfattning : Biochemical processes all involve associations and dissociations of chemical entities. Understanding these is of substantial importance for many modern pharmaceutical applications. In this thesis, longstanding problems with regard to ligand binding are treated with computational methods, applied to proteins of key pharmaceutical importance. LÄS MER
9. Recombinant CXCR4/CCR5 hybrid receptors as tools for studies of HIV-1 receptor usage
Sammanfattning : The chemokine receptors CCR5 and CXCR4 are required, together with CD4, for the entry of HIV-1 into target cells. CCR5 using HIV-1 dominates during transmission and the asymptomatic phase of infection. During progression, virus phenotypes with the ability to use CXCR4 emerge in about 50% of infected individuals. 10. Discovery of Novel Receptors for Lipid Mediators - a study leading to the identification of receptors involved in metabolism and the immune system
Sammanfattning : Intercellular communication is of crucial importance in regulating physiology and G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) have evolved as an important mechanism in this process. Of the approximately 800 human GPCRs, about 160 are still considered to be “orphan” receptors for which an endogenous ligand remains to be identified. LÄS MER
