21. Molecular basis for the anti-inflammatory properties of chlomethiazole
Sammanfattning : Chlomethiazole (CMZ) exerts neuroprotective effects in animal models of stroke, and its clinical efficacy is currently evaluated in acute stroke patients. CMZ also protects the liver from alcohol- induced oxidative damage by inhibiting the cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1), as well as inflammation associated with alcohol liver disease (ALD) by inhibiting cytokine expression. 22. Heavy metal neurotoxicity : on trimethyltin-, methylmercury- and cadmium-induced disturbances of neurotransmitter systems and neurotrophins
Sammanfattning : Organic and inorganic metal compounds produced by human activities often reach the environment where they are associated with a plethora of potential health hazards. Of particular concern is the risk for CNS disturbances during development or in the adult. LÄS MER
23. Effects of nicotine on mesolimbocortical dopaminergic neurotransmission : a pharmacological study in the rat
Sammanfattning : Tobacco-smoking represents a form of drug addiction to nicotine (NlC) and the reinforcing and dependence-producing properties of NIC depend largely on central dopamine (DA) neurons, located in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and projecting mainly to the nucleus accumbens (NAc; mesolimbic DA system) and the medial prefrontal cortex (PFC; mesocortical DA system). Generally, the mesolimbic DA system plays a pivotal role in the reinforcing effects of natural rewards as well as of drugs of abuse. LÄS MER
24. Gluco- and mineralocorticoid receptor regulation of regional brain neurotrophism
Sammanfattning : Gluco- and mineralocorticoid hormones exert powerful actions on brain function and are important in the mediation of the stress response and the survival of hippocampal neurons. The aim of this thesis was to study the influence of glucocorticoid (GR)/mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) actions on brain neurotrophism including analyses of immediate early genes (IEGs) and of feedback responses on GR and/or MR. 25. Selective insulin signaling in the pancreatic beta-cell via the two insulin receptor isoforms
Sammanfattning : Insulin exhibits pleiotropic effects that are tissue- as well as development-dependent. However, the mechanisms by which insulin gains selective effects are poorly understood. Selectivity in insulin signaling is currently discussed as the result of the activation of specific signal transduction pathways. LÄS MER
