    Sammanfattning : Population analysis of pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) data by the use of non-linear mixed effects modeling offers a number of benefits over traditional methods of analyzing this type of data. These benefits include the possibility to appropriately characterize the typical PK/PD behaviour in the population as well as the associated variability when only a few observations are available for each individual.     Sammanfattning : Despite the growing promise of pharmaceutical research, inferior experimentation or interpretation of data can inhibit breakthrough molecules from finding their way out of research institutions and reaching patients. This thesis provides evidence that better characterization of pre-clinical and clinical data can be accomplished using non-linear mixed effect modeling (NLMEM) and more effective experiments can be conducted using optimal design (OD).
